what is portrait photography?
Portrait Photography : A person or group of people that displays the expression, personality, and mood of the subject .
How to take a good portrait?
To take a good portrait picture is using a good exposure compensation, because it brings the models features .
Capturing some one smiling or laughing can be difficult , however possible . A fast shutter speed by increasing your ISO can bring out their personality .
Posing is very important when taking a good portrait this makes the picture more effective eg . a business man may use a more masculine pose which is putting the body weight forward onto their front foot ,so they're leaning forward .
Feminine poses are also when the woman stands firmly on both feet and face the camera .
Portrait Photography is all about using props eg . A reflector .
capturing warm or to brighten photographs .
JIMMY NELSON
Jimmy Nelson is a British photojournalist and photographer best known for his portraits of tribals.
Jimmy started working as a photojournalist in 1987 . In early 1994 he and his Dutch wife produced Literary Portraits of China , a 30 month project that brought them to all the hidden corners of the newly opening People’s Republic . Between 2010 & 2013 Jimmy Nelson traveled the world to document some of the most fantastic indigenous cultures left on the planet today . I like Jimmy Nelson style of photography because he really captures the tribes in their ways of surviving and living conditions. The contrast are beautiful on the pictures as the clothing matches the atmosphere and surrounding objects . eg . the man wearing the white fur coat while it's snowing. |

The tone of the image is dark and this reflects with the shadows.
The colour of the image is black and white which makes the features stand out. The contrast of the white fingernails and eyes really make the image stand out. The depth of field is small because you can't see the background on what's behind them . The mood of the image is depressing |

Evaluation
The artist I've researched is David Lazar, Albert watson and Lee Jefferies. I've discovered them through google . I've learnt through the artist David Lazar that he uses bright colours that contrasts with the different ethnicity he uses in his picture.
My first thought of David Lazar is that he is really good with making things stand out. I'v learnt that he really uses colours to emphasis on certain features of people such as the boy with the green eyes with the green painting on his face is used to put more focus on the eyes.
I particularly responded to the work of David Lazar images because they are skillful and colourful . I've used the same technique such as the bright colours and the straight foward perspective.
Both artist Lee jefferies and Albert watson use contrast with black and white to make features stand out.
I found it challenging to come up with ideas that were unique that any artist I've researched hasn't done yet as I didn't want to copy their work.
I developed my investigation by taking pictures at home and using fruits such as oranges and props .
I was hoping to create the same colourful portraits as David Lazar , It worked and I think I've sucessfully explored this theme. through the last image.
If I had more time I would try the Albert watson by using more black and white images.
